3 Kitchen Design Trends for 2026

Kitchen design in 2026 is trending towards three things: nature, nostalgia and nuance. Designs are moving away from stark whites and sharp corners and towards earthy colours, warm tones and art deco-style fittings.

In 2026 kitchens are going to be less of a sterile environment and more of a welcoming social space, yet not at the expense of functionality. Howdens agrees that three of its Top Five Kitchen Trends (“Kitchen Trends | Kitchen Trends 2026”) for 2026 are classic, country and natural.

Biophilic Design - Returning to Nature

This design brings nature back into your home, taking you back to your roots to create a sense of calm and wellbeing, which has a huge influence on the trend (“Kitchen Design Trends 2026”), too.

Biophilic design includes using natural materials such as wood, not just for worktops but cabinets, too. Stone is also being used for worktops and splashbacks to create an attractive accent without straying from the natural theme. Expect to see warm, muted colours like olive greens and browns, which look beautiful in natural light.

Wood, stone and earthy tones make for a calming, homely design.

Vintage Design with Modern Functionality

While nostalgia is a known source of melancholy it has a place in the world, and right now it is in design. The appeal of art deco-style fittings, bold shapes and brass, creates a traditional, hand-crafted feel. It’s a nod to a simpler time, but the aesthetic must not come at the cost of function.

Behind the rustic and pleasant appearance of a cast iron range cooker can lie an advanced modern appliance with superior insulation, temperature control and even WiFi connectivity. A burnished tap that for all the world looks to be decades old can be a new boil tap that removes the need for a kettle.

In 2026 vintage design does not come at the cost of modern innovation.

Traditional and beautiful vintage aesthetic.

Multi-purpose Islands and Pantries

Islands are becoming less a feature or a kitchen table and more of a workhorse in modern kitchens. It is not uncommon for islands to include ample workspace for meal prep, large sinks and even hobs and ovens. Islands can also provide a large amount of storage space, reducing the need for kitchen cabinets and potentially enabling a simpler, more open kitchen design.

Speaking of storage space, floor-to-ceiling pantries have re-emerged as a hot topic in kitchen design. While providing an elegant frontage to your kitchen, they are extremely customisable and can be curated to your exact needs. Although they have been traditionally used for storing dried and canned goods, expect to see them used more and more for storing kitchen appliances that otherwise often clutter cabinets and drawers (Cockburn).

The island enables fewer and shallower cabinets around the kitchen walls.
